Library & Laboratory

LIBRARY

Apart from 1256 books and 3 journals available on the subject in the Central Library of the College, there is a departmental library. There are more than 50 books (mainly sample copies from publishers) which are issued by students as well as by teachers time to time. The Department has its own conventions regarding the issue and return of the books. An issue register is maintained for the same.

A library charity "Udayan" was set up on 24.02.2019 by the Department to provide books on the subject to the needy students of the Department. The charity depends on the voluntary support of the faculty members with books and magazines pertaining to the subject. It also looks forward to book contributions by the former students of the Department as well. The charity aims at supporting the students of all the Departments of the College in future.

LABORATORY

The Department is endowed with two laboratories:

1. Geography Laboratory with adequate no. of instruments for surveying (prismatic compass, dumpy level, theodolite, clinometer, abney level and the ancilliary), for soil analysis (soil testing kit), for weather recording (Six's maximum & minimum thermometer, barometer, wind vane and anemometer); maps (world map, maps of India, West Bengal and Purulia, SOI topographical maps of varying dimensions and different areas of the country); rock & mineral samples; etc.

Students are given hands-on training on the use of the instruments. The maps & instruments are also made available to the students for practice beyond the scheduled practical classes.

A stock register and an issue register (for both teachers and students) are maintained for a proper record of the availability, use, depreciation and repair/purchase of the laboratory items.

2. GIS laboratory - A separate laboratory was established in 2012 for the fulfillment of the Honours Course curriculum on Remote Sensing and GIS. There are six computers (5:1 student:computer ratio) with licensed GIS software (TNT mips as per University guidelines) & internet facilities; one scanner-cum printer and one colour printer. A projector & screen, and a whiteboard is also available in the laboratory that helps in smooth delivery of lectures.

Students are given hands-on training on the use of the GIS software. The computers are made available to the students for practice beyond the scheduled practical classes. Given their economic constraints of the students, prints of map outputs are provided to the students that helps reducing to some extent, their costs on preparing laboratory notebooks.

A stock register and an issue register are maintained for a proper record of the availability, use, depreciation and repair/purchase of the computer hardwares and softwares.
